HOW TO USE THE RENT AFFORDABILITY CALCULATOR

This free rent affordability calculator estimates how much monthly rent may fit within your income and budget.

HOW TO GET STARTED

  1. Enter your monthly income before taxes.

  2. Enter your monthly debt payments.

  3. Add other required monthly expenses if requested.

  4. Choose the percentage of income you want available for rent.

  5. Select Calculate to view your estimated affordable rent.

HOW THE CALCULATOR WORKS

The calculator compares your income with your selected rent percentage and other financial obligations.

A commonly used guideline is to keep rent near 30% of gross monthly income. However, this is only a general guideline. Your affordable amount may be different based on your location, debts, expenses, savings goals, and household needs.

EXAMPLE

Suppose your gross monthly income is $4,000.

Using a 30% guideline would produce an estimated rent amount of $1,200 per month.

However, utilities, insurance, transportation, debt payments, and other expenses should also be considered before choosing a rental home.
