HOW TO USE THE EMERGENCY FUND CALCULATOR

This free emergency fund calculator estimates how much money you may want to save for unexpected expenses or a temporary loss of income.

HOW TO GET STARTED

  1. Enter your essential monthly expenses.

  2. Choose how many months of expenses you want to cover.

  3. Enter the amount you have already saved.

  4. Enter how much you can contribute each month.

  5. Select Calculate to view your emergency-fund goal and estimated timeline.

HOW THE CALCULATOR WORKS

The calculator multiplies your essential monthly expenses by the number of months you want your emergency fund to cover.

It then subtracts your current savings to determine how much more you may need. Your monthly contribution is used to estimate how long reaching the goal could take.

EXAMPLE

Suppose your essential monthly expenses are $2,500 and you want to cover four months.

Your estimated emergency-fund goal would be $10,000.

If you already have $2,000 saved, you would need approximately $8,000 more. Saving $400 each month would take an estimated 20 months, excluding interest or withdrawals.
